3.2. IRC For The Benefit of Universities
IRC has a notable advantage of promoting better communication between its users without the limitations of physical methods. In this era of Information, being able to communicate and share informations from across the globe is a needed skill to be competitive. Information and knowledge is no longer limited by where the person is, where the person is studying. Those who are able to utilize the communication mediums effectively are those who have more advantages.
The immediate benefit if IRC is being utilized fully in the university is the existence of a fast medium of communication for the residents. Announcements such as class cancellation, venue change, notification from management, notification from Petronas ESU, events and related can quickly reach the targeted people through their computer.
Unlike a physical room, where people meet face-to-face, in an IRC channel, participants meet each other virtually, identified with their nick/handler. This anonymous nature, in a lot of cases removed the difference of race, religion, skin color, age, and position. Channel members treat each other as equal with least discrimination. This anonymous nature too, is able to increase the confidence of members to speak up (ask questions, give opinion, etc). This is good because it will encourage people to be more confident of themselves.
Being in IRC is also a convenient way to communicate. Users can be anywhere they wish, make it at their room, office, or perhaps, even at their home. Students for example, is able to communicate with other students in the comfort of their own room. If the lecturers are also on IRC, students can speak directly to them without being afraid of seeing them face to face. There are a lot of cases where students are afraid to see the lecturer physically, or even, students who sees walking to the lecturer's office is a troublesome activity. So, having another medium for them to communicate with their lecturers will promote a much better culture of communication.
The nature of IRC where people able to ignore their differences allows more community interactions between the users. Students from different origins are able to sit together and befriend each other much better. In a channel where the members are people who share the same interests, an IRC environment encourage community spirit into them. People help each other on their point of interest, share informations across themselves, and from there onwards, they will slowly earn values as a good community member, a good netizen, and hopefully, a better person for the nation and religion.
The semi-anonymous nature encourage users to be more vocal with their opinions too. This will encourage new ideas to be much easily be surfaced. Young generations might have new ideas which can be used for the benefit of all, however, they might be afraid to voice out those ideas. We might have been losing a lot of great ideas and talent because we did not find a way to surface those.
